The 12th General Assembly

“Take courage, it is I; do not be afraid” (Matthew 14:27)

16 - 20 May 2022

The "Middle East Council of Churches" was established in 1974 when the previous “Near East Council of Churches” (with a Protestant majority) was transformed into a larger council that gathered three major church families in the East: The Evangelical family (Lutheran, Reformed, and Anglican), the Eastern Orthodox family (Coptic, Syriac, and Armenian) and the Orthodox family (which included the Patriarchates of Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem, in addition to the Church of Cyprus). Then, following a historical initiative that occurred between 1989 and 1990, the seven Eastern Catholic Churches also joined the Council, namely: The Maronite, the Catholic Melkite, the Armenian, the Syrian, the Coptic, the Chaldean and the Latin churches. Consequently, the Council became an ecumenical body which includes the overwhelming majority of Christians in the East.
