The Middle East Council of Churches (MECC) continues its dedicated efforts to support the educational process and provide a healthy, safe school environment that protects students.

Recently, these efforts were translated into action through the rehabilitation of six schools in Dara’a Governorate, implemented through the MECC Diakonia and Social Service Department, Syria’s Office.

The project contributed to improving Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) facilities, upgrading classrooms and hallways, and ensuring a more comfortable environment for both students and teachers.

The renovation works included the rehabilitation of sewerage system infrastructure and its fittings, maintenance of the drinking water network, and the installation of faucets, toilets, doors, tiles. In addition, new water tanks were installed, painting works were carried out, and canopies were added in the schoolyards to protect students from the sun and rain.

Students expressed their joy at the improvements they noticed at the start of the school year, especially regarding the WASH facilities.

A fourth-grade student said she used to avoid using the toilets last year because of the unpleasant odors, lack of lighting, particularly in winter, and the absence of running water to wash her hands. “I often had to wait until the school day ended, and sometimes I went home early, missing several lessons,” she said.

Ahmad Al-Zoubi, Principal of Al-Yadoudeh Primary School, said; “The condition of the sanitation facilities used to be extremely poor; students had to go back home during school hours just to use the bathroom. Today, thanks to the support of MECC, the facilities are clean, new, and safe for students.”

“The entire school has been repainted, and the classroom floors, previously damaged and unsafe, have been repaired. The newly installed canopy in the school yards protect students from both rain and sun, while the new water tanks ensure a steady water supply throughout the day. This helps students maintain hygiene, drink clean water, and ensures that water is always available in the toilets.”

A total of 3024 students benefited from the rehabilitation work carried out in these schools.

In addition, students received school kits containing a schoolbag, notebooks, pens, pencils, rulers, sharpeners, and erasers.
