"So it was, as soon as the days of his service were completed, that he departed to his own house". (Luke 1:23)

With hearts that find solace in the Lord’s victory over death and in the promise of resurrection and eternal life, His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II, Patriarch of Antioch and All the East and Supreme Head of the Syriac Orthodox Church, announces the passing of His Eminence Mor Gregorios Saliba Shamoun, Patriarchal Advisor, who departed this life on Friday, July 18, 2025, having completed his days of service with faithfulness and love.

His Eminence lived his life as a devoted servant of the Church. He was born in Mosul in 1932. He entered the monastic life in his youth and was ordained a priest in 1958. In 1969, he was elected and consecrated as Archbishop, leading the Syriac Orthodox Archdiocese of Mosul and Environs for many decades. Following his retirement, he graciously continued to serve the Holy Synod as a Patriarchal Advisor, combining wisdom and humility with teaching and pastoral care, until he completed his journey in peace.

Though we feel his absence physically today, we find comfort in the promise of our faithful and trustworthy Lord:
"If anyone serves Me, let him follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also. If anyone serves Me, him My Father will honor." (John 12:26)
May his memory be eternal.
