The Feast of Saint John the New Hozevite at The Greek Patriarchate of Jerusalem
From the General Secretariat of the Greek Patriarchate of Jerusalem
On Sunday, 28 July / 10 August 2025, the commemoration of Saint John the New Hozevite, from Romania, was celebrated at the Holy Monastery of the Hozevites.
Saint John was distinguished for the high standards of his monastic asceticism and priestly calling, chiefly for his humility, despite his high education, his poverty, his vigil, and his love in Christ, and he was deemed worthy by the Holy Spirit of many gifts and miracles.
Saint John was included in her Synaxarion by the Church of Jerusalem through a decision of its Holy Synod and by a special canonisation service at the Holy Monastery of Hozeva on 18 / 31 January of the year 2016, with the 28th of July appointed as the day of his commemoration.
The memory of Saint John was celebrated with an All-night Vigil, presided over by His Beatitude Theophilos III, Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem, and honorary President of the Middle East Council of Churches concelebrating with the Representative of the Patriarchate of Romania, Archimandrite John, the Holy Sepulchre Archimandrite Amphilochios, the Hieromonk of the Monastery Archimandrite Chrysogonos, and other Priests, together with Archdeacon Mark and Hierodeacon Prodromos, with the chanting of the monks of the Brotherhood and visiting chanters from the Church of Greece: Mr Christos Stavrou, chief cantor of the Church of Saint Paraskevi of the homonymous Municipality; Mr Ioannis Stavrou, chief cantor of the Church of Saint Demetrios of Tripoli; Mr Bouzas Nikolaos, chief cantor of the Church of Saint John of Derveni; and Mr Athanasios Stavrou, Lampadarios of the Church of Saint Markella of Votanikos.
Festal addresses were delivered by the Hegume, Archimandrite Constantine, after welcoming His Beatitude, and by His Beatitude before the Holy Communion.
