His Holiness Catholicos Aram I Presides Over the Ceremony of Antelias Pilgrimage Day and the Feast of the Descent of St. Gregory the Illuminator into the Pit of Khor Virab
Antelias Pilgrimage Day was solemnly commemorated with a Vespers ceremony on Saturday, 21 March 2026, at 7:00 p.m. at St. Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral in Antelias, Lebanon, drawing a large number of pilgrims and faithful who gathered in Prayer and reflection to mark this significant annual observance. The occasion falls on the Feast commemorating the descent of St. Gregory the Illuminator, the Patron Saint of the Armenian Church, into the pit of Khor Virab.
His Holiness Catholicos Aram I, Catholicos of the Armenian Church, Holy See of Cilicia, and Honorary President of the Middle East Council of Churches (MECC), presided over the Ceremony, delivering an inspiring message to the congregation at its conclusion. He began by expressing gratitude to God for the opportunity to celebrate this Feast and pilgrimage, especially in light of the current challenges facing Lebanon. Reflecting on the enduring role of Saints, His Holiness described them as guiding stars who illuminate our lives even in the darkest times.
He highlighted the mission of St. Gregory, whose faith and perseverance brought spiritual enlightenment to the Armenian people. Quoting Christ’s exhortation, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me” (Matthew 16:24), His Holiness Catholicos Aram I emphasized the importance of humility, selflessness, and service to those in need. He explained that to deny oneself is to place the needs of others—particularly the poor and vulnerable—at the center of our lives, and that bearing the Cross means being prepared to endure hardships for values that transcend personal interest, rooted in biblical teachings.
Concluding his address, His Holiness Catholicos Aram I spoke about the Pontifical proclamation of 2026 as the Year of Spiritual Renewal, inviting the faithful to embrace Christ’s call and live according to the enduring values of the Gospel.
