His Beatitude Patriarch Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa Calls for A day of Prayer, Fasting And Penance

To the Diocese of the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

May the Lord give you peace!

The month of October is approaching, and with it the realization that for the past year the Holy Land, and not only, has been plunged into a vortex of violence and hatred never seen or experienced before. The intensity and impact of the tragedies we have witnessed in the past twelve months have deeply lacerated our conscience and our sense of humanity.

Violence, which has caused and is causing thousands of innocent victims, has also found its way into political and social language and actions. It has struck a profound blow to the common feeling of belonging to the Holy Land, to the consciousness of being part of a plan of Providence that wanted us here to build together His Kingdom of peace and justice, and not to make it instead a reservoir of hatred and contempt, of mutual rejection and annihilation.

In recent months we have already spoken out clearly about what is happening and have repeatedly reiterated our condemnation of this senseless war and what has generated it, calling on everyone to stop this drift of violence, and to have the courage to find other ways of resolving the current conflict, which take into account the demands of justice, dignity and security for all...

His Beatitude Patriarch Kyrios Kyrios Theophilos III Celebrates the Feast of the Universal Exaltation of the Precious and Life-Giving Cross

The Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem celebrated the Feast of the All-Glorious Exaltation of the Holy Cross on Friday, September 14/27, 2024.

The whole Church, especially that of Jerusalem, renews in its memory that Saint Helen, sent to the Holy Land by her son, the glorious king and equal to the apostles, Constantine the Great, found the Holy and Life-giving Cross on Golgotha and the Lord’s Holy Sepulchre, and erected the surrounding complex of the Church of the Resurrection in the decade 326-336 AD.

To the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ crucified in the flesh and risen from the dead, the Archbishop of Jerusalem Makarios held the consecration of this surrounding Church in the presence of Saint Helen on September 13, 336 AD. Then he raised the Cross of Christ so the assembled multitudes could gaze at it from afar, who repeatedly chanted “Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy”.

Since then, this act has remained a tradition in the Church, celebrated on September 14th, the day after the feast of the consecration.

His Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew Advocates For Common Pascha Date

His Holiness the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew has noted that Easter celebration in 2025 “will not merely be a fortuitous occurrence, but rather the beginning of a unified date for its observance by both Eastern and Western Christianity.”

The Ecumenical Patriarch said that this aspiration is particularly significant in light of the upcoming 1700th anniversary in 2025, marking the convening of the First Ecumenical Synod in Nicaea.

“Among its pivotal discussions was the matter of establishing a common timeframe for the Easter festivities,” said the Ecumenical Patriarch in a Homily. “We are optimistic, as there is goodwill and willingness on both sides. Because, indeed, it is a scandal to celebrate separately the unique event of the one Resurrection of the One Lord!”
