The Secretary General Professor Michel Abs in the Season of Creation: A paradigm shift is of utmost necessity
The Middle East Council of Churches, Rooted in Its Theological Faith, Carries the Environmental Issue Through a Series of Environmental Activities
While our world is immersed in security, social, environmental, and health crises that cast their shadows across the globe, clinging to hope remains a source of strength and determination to work together for peace and justice for all of God's creation, despite all the challenges surrounding it.
Amidst the conflicts and wars that burden the people of the Middle East and the world, many initiatives have emerged and seek to highlight the importance of the environmental issue, raising their voices loudly to instill an ecological culture in order to preserve the environment, which is being threatened.
Hence, the "Season of Creation" rings the alarm bell, alerting us to the need to pay attention to God's creation, listen to its cry and groan, and make efforts to protect it. Working together to promote environmental awareness contributes to the path towards peace, truth and justice.
On the occasion of the "Season of Creation" 2025, which this year bears the theme "Peace with Creation" and the symbol of “Garden of Peace”, inspired by Isaiah 32: 14-18, the Secretary General of the Middle East Council of Churches (MECC) Professor Michel Abs, addressed the world's people with a statement:
"We should not disappoint the Creator by spoiling His creation, with which He entrusted us from the dawn of times and keeps protecting us from ourselves. A paradigm shift is of utmost necessity."
Thus, this statement, published in the “Season of Creation” 2025 guide, along with statements by international religious and Ecumenical figures, emphasizes the need to strengthen environmental advocacy and embrace the environment, which constitutes one of the most significant gifts that the Creator has bestowed upon us.
It is worth noting that the Middle East Council of Churches, rooted in its Theological faith, seeks to defend the beleaguered environment for years. It has become active in many environmental fields, theologically, media-wise, culturally, and on the field, through the launch of the Season in the Middle East in 2021 and its annual translation of the Season of Creation guide into Arabic.
Moreover, The Middle East Council of Churches continues its environmental work throughout the year via the Environmental Justice Unit within the Theological and Ecumenical Department, through seminars, lectures, afforestation campaigns, and awareness-raising sessions. We must not forget the mission of the Communication and Media Department, which produces various journalistic and media materials, visual, audio, and written, to promote the environmental culture and shed light on this important issue for Christians and humanity.
Noting that the "Season of Creation" begins each year on September 1, with the Feast of Creation, and ends on October 4, with the Feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, the Patron Saint of Ecology.
