Based on the Middle East Council of Churches (MECC)’ commitment to follow up on the field the humanitarian response in Lebanon amidst the repercussions of the war in the country, the team of the MECC Diakonia and Social Service Department – Lebanon’s Office made field visits to the Municipality and to the Melkite Greek Catholic Cathedral of the Prophet Elijah – the Episcopal Vicariate in of Deir El Qamar.
These visits aimed to assess displacement situations and identify the most urgent humanitarian needs of affected families, as well as to distribute vouchers to internally displaced people in Deir El-Qamar and deliver first aid kits to collective shelters and displaced communities.
In this context, Archimandrite Naaman Kouzhia, the Episcopal Vicar in Deir El Qamar, conveyed his deep gratitude to MECC for its support to both the town and displaced families hosted there. He also emphasized that despite limited capacities and scarce resources, MECC stood by the community with humanity, sincerity, and compassion, supporting people without any discrimination.
For his part, the Mayor of Deir El Qamar expressed his appreciation to MECC for its continuous support throughout the displacement crisis. He highlighted that MECC was among the first organizations to support collective shelters in the area through diesel provision, blankets, first aid kits, and unrestricted vouchers. He also particularly praised the first aid kits, noting that they arrived at a critical time and were well-prepared, organized, and highly needed.
