The Platform of the Word at the Middle East Council of Churches Lights Its First Annual Candle

With great joy and hope, “The Platform of the Word” at the Middle East Council of Churches (MECC) lights its first annual candle, carrying with it the voice of humanity and the issues of society. It seeks to form an interactive space and a platform aimed at promoting human values and strengthening a culture of love, peace, and fraternity.

Under the supervision and guidance of the MECC Secretary General Professor Michel Abs, “The Platform of the Word,” since its launch in 2025, has presented a diverse network of cultural and social programs, as well as lectures, roundtables, and various forms of media production. It strives to shed light on issues and initiatives that aim to preserve human rights and the dignity.

The platform also serves as a space that highlights the mission of the Middle East Council of Churches, along with its various fields of work on the Theological, Ecumenical, humanitarian, social, relief, and media fields.

MECC is also working on preparing new programs and media materials that keep pace with the Church and social developments in the region, so that it may be a voice crying out in the wilderness and an intellectual oasis for encounter, solidarity, and mutual support.

MECC Contributes in the Health and Psychosocial Women Empowerment

An Initiative Reaching 80 Families in Damascus and Rural Damascus

Amid the pressures of daily life responsibilities, women often forget to give themselves a moment of care for their psychological well-being. As women are the cornerstone of the family and a key element in building a healthy and balanced society, the Middle East Council of Churches (MECC), through its Diakonia and Social Service Department – Syria Office, organized health awareness and psychosocial support sessions for women.

Twenty women from Damascus and its countryside participated in these sessions.

The six-day training witnessed strong engagement from the participants, who were eager to gain medical knowledge about various diseases and healthy nutrition practices.

These sessions aimed to empower women to better understand their physical and psychological needs and equip them with the necessary tools to improve their quality of life, positively impacting their families and communities.

The psychosocial support sessions also provided valuable insights that helped participants adjust their behavior within their families and increased their awareness of the importance of self-care, thereby enhancing their ability to care for their loved ones.

Statement Issued by the Middle East Council of Churches

The Middle East Council of Churches (MECC) condemns the barbaric aggression against Lebanon and affirms the right of the Lebanese people to security, dignity, and life. It considers that protecting the homeland is achieved not only by defending its land and sovereignty, but also by safeguarding social unity, closing ranks, and preventing political differences from devolving into civil divisions or campaigns of defamation and abuse.

In this context, the MECC expresses its severe denunciation and categorical condemnation of the insults directed at His Beatitude Maronite Patriarch Cardinal Mar Bechara Boutros al-Rahi, President of the Assembly of Catholic Patriarchs and Bishops in Lebanon, on social media platforms, affirming its full and unwavering solidarity with him. This targeting does not merely affect a specific individual; rather, it strikes at a national and spiritual authority of historical and religious significance, constituting an assault on the moral values that call for respecting human dignity and safeguarding religious symbols.

While affirming His Beatitude's spiritual and national standing, the Council calls for the respect and preservation of the dignity of all religious authorities, as they are a fundamental part of our society's identity and spiritual values, and a unifying reference in the life of our people…

Middle East: WCC, MECC invite webinar on diaconal response in times of war

A joint webinar by the World Council of Churches (WCC) and the Middle East Council of Churches (MECC) will shed light on the essential service-oriented role of churches in times of crisis and war.

As the Middle East continues to face protracted conflicts, humanitarian crises, and deep social and economic disruption, communities across the region are affected by displacement, loss of livelihoods, limited access to essential services, and growing vulnerability.

In these same contexts, churches and church-related organizations have consistently played a vital role as service providers and community anchors, often remaining present where other systems have collapsed or are inaccessible.

On Thursday 7 May at 14.00 CEST (15.00 Beirut), a webinar entitled “Role of the Church in Times of War: A Diaconal Response in the Middle East” will highlight themes such as: Diakonia as Service in Times of War; Humanitarian and Social Service Delivery; Health and Healing Ministries; Community Support and Social Cohesion; Psychosocial and Pastoral Care; and Sustaining Services in Fragile Contexts.

In Antioch: A Present that Mirrors Memory and Future

Professor Michel Abs

The Secretary General of the Middle East Council of Churches (MECC)

In our Eastern churches of the Levant, memory plays a fundamental role in maintaining the cohesion of the faithful community and preserving its beliefs, rituals, and traditions.

In the Antiochian Levant, as in Anatolia, attempts were historically made to uproot this presence, from Armenian massacres to massacres of the Syrians, Assyrians, and Anatolian Greeks, which claimed millions of victims and displaced people, destroyed large portions of these peoples’ civilizations, and emptied vast areas of their historical homelands, where roots run deep from prehistoric times.

His Beatitude Patriarch John X, the Most Blessed, the Thirteenth of the Righteous Apostles, fully understands this reality, experiencing it in both past and present, and approaches it with the intent not only to keep memory alive but to link it to contemporary reality, making it a support for a future that is resilient and enduring until the end of time.

In everything He does and says, He ensures that the faithful are fully aware of their memory, reinforces their present with the confidence required to persevere, and opens horizons to a future he envisions as promising in presence and role.

In Damascus, at the Mariamite Patriarchate; in Tel Kawkab, where the Incarnate Lord appeared to Saul; in various regions of Lebanon; and today in the northern Antiochian Levant, through his blessed pastoral visits to Mersin, Antioch, and Alexandretta, His presence continually ties past, present, and future.

In Mersin, surrounded by the Bishops of the Holy Synod, His Beatitude recalled history and consecrated Bishop Paul of Tarsus, honoring the Apostle to the Nations, Paul, who played the greatest role in spreading the salvific doctrine worldwide…
