His Holiness Pope Leo XIV to Vatican Observatory: Church embraces science to find God in Creation

As he meets with the Vatican Observatory Foundation, His Holiness Pope Leo XIV upholds the Catholic Church’s desire to seek God in His Creation through rigorous, honest science.

His Holiness Pope Leo XIV held an audience on Monday with the Board of the Vatican Observatory Foundation.

In his address, the Pope recalled that His Holiness Pope Leo XIII re-founded the Vatican Observatory in 1891, at a time when science was being presented as a rival source of truth to religion.

The 19th-century Pope said he was re-founding the institution so that, “everyone might see clearly that the Church and her Pastors are not opposed to true and solid science, whether human or divine, but that they embrace it, encourage it, and promote it with the fullest possible devotion.”

His Beatitude Patriarch Mar Polis III Nona, Patriarch of the Chaldean Church, celebrated the Mass of the Fifth Sunday of Easter on May 3, 2026, at the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Sydney, as part of his pastoral visits to the parishes of the eparchy following his election as Patriarch.

In his reflection on the Gospel of the day, which recounts the third appearance of Jesus after the Resurrection (John 21:1–14), Patriarch Nona spoke about the action of Peter when he recognized Jesus standing on the shore: he took his garment and wrapped it around himself, for he had been naked. His Beatitude explained, as reported on the official page of the Chaldean Eparchy of St. Thomas the Apostle in Australia and New Zealand, that “the sense of nakedness in Sacred Scripture symbolizes the human person’s awareness of sin before God, prompting him to cover himself, as occurred with Adam and Eve after the Fall”…
